Who is Johannes Vermeer? Like Rembrandt, he was one of the 17th century Dutch masters, but he didn't become famous until 200 years after his death. Furthermore, there is a controversy surrounding him that still exists today. How popular is Vermeer? When the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam put on a Vermeer Exhibition with the most Vermeer paintings (28 of his 36 surviving paintings) ever shown in one place, it became the most popular exhibition in the 140-year history of the Rijksmuseum! Over 650,000 people from 113 countries attended the sold-out 4 1/2 month exhibition. In this video, Part 1 of two parts, I will explain in detail Vermeer's painting techniques which made him one of the greatest artists ever, as well as the symbolism behind his paintings. We will learn about his life and his death, and we'll find out why the controversy that has followed him for centuries will never be settled.
