Can countries of the QUAD move beyond geopolitical compulsions and political hubris to rise towards a future of common goals and interest? Journalist Suhasini Haider discusses the QUAD and beyond with American Ambassador to India, H.E. Eric Garcetti; Former Prime Minister to Australia, Malcolm Turnbull; High Commissioner of Australia to India Philip Green; and the former Foreign Secretary to the Government of India, Shyam Saran.

Eric Garcetti, US Ambassador to India, is a committed public servant, educator, and diplomat. He has previously served as the Mayor of Los Angeles, during which he led the city through the pandemic crisis, charted a bold green future, and launched record investments in infrastructure. Garcetti has also served as Chair of C40 Cities, a network of 97 cities taking climate action.

Hiroshi Suzuki is the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to India Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to the Kingdom of Bhutan (Concurrently). He has had a long and illustrious career as a diplomat with postings in the US and across Europe. He has a Master’s degree from The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy.

The Honourable Malcolm Turnbull AC, Australia’s 29th Prime Minister, reformed Australia’s personal income tax, education and childcare systems, oversaw the legalisation of same-sex marriage and announced the construction of Snowy Hydro 2.0, the biggest pumped hydro scheme in the southern hemisphere. As a young lawyer, he successfully defended former MI5 agent Peter Wright against the British Government in the 1986 ‘Spycatcher’ trial before running his own investment banking firm and joining Goldman Sachs as partner. Mr Turnbull has been a successful venture capitalist and co-founded OzEmail Limited, the first Australian tech company to be listed on NASDAQ. He is currently a senior adviser to KKR and a director of the International Hydropower Association and Chairman of Australian Fortescue Future Industries. Mr Turnbull speaks and writes on a range of issues including cyber security, geopolitics and renewable energy.

High Commissioner Philip Green is an Australian diplomat with experience on four continents - Ambassador or High Commissioner to Germany, Singapore, South Africa and Kenya. He also served as head of the division in the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade responsible for managing Australia’s relations with the United States during the Trump Presidency. His career includes many highlights such as the Lead responsibility for the development of Australia’s policy on the Quad from 2017 to 2019; Piloting the conclusion of the Enhanced Strategic Partnership with Germany and the Australia-Germany Hydrogen Accord (2021); the conclusion of Australia’s Comprehensive Strategic Partnership with Singapore in 2016, and upgrade to the Australia-Singapore Free Trade Agreement. Mr Green was also Prime Minister Kevin Rudd’s International Adviser between 2009 and 2010.

Shyam Saran is a former Foreign Secretary of India and Prime Minister’s Special Envoy for Nuclear Affairs and Climate Change. He was Chairman of the National Security Advisory Board 2013 to 2015. Saran is currently the President of the India International Centre. He is the author of How India Sees the World and How China Sees India and the World.

Suhasini Haidar is the Diplomatic Editor of The Hindu newspaper. She covers international developments and India's ties with the world, contributes columns to The Hindu and has authored chapters in several books about South Asia, Indian diplomacy and other foreign policy issues.
