Kelly Johnson was an American aeronautical and systems engineer. He is recognized for his contributions to a series of important aircraft designs, most notably the Lockheed U-2 and SR-71 Blackbird.
The SR-71 Blackbird was first flown in 1964 and quickly established itself as one of the fastest and most advanced aircraft in the world. The aircraft was capable of reaching speeds of over 2,000 miles per hour and could fly at altitudes of over 85,000 feet, making it invulnerable to most anti-aircraft missiles. The SR-71 was used by the U.S. Air Force for reconnaissance missions and was also used by NASA for high-altitude research.

Johnson and his team at Skunk Works had to overcome many technical challenges in order to develop the SR-71, including dealing with the extreme temperatures generated by the aircraft's high-speed flight. The SR-71 was also built with a high degree of secrecy and was not officially acknowledged by the U.S. government until 1974.

Johnson's work on the SR-71 Blackbird is considered one of the greatest achievements in aerospace engineering, and the aircraft is still considered a technological marvel. The SR-71 was in service for 24 years and only 32 were built, it is considered one of the most iconic and advanced aircraft of the Cold War Era.
