Historical Background
Thailand, known as Siam until 1939, was the only Southeast Asian country that maintained its sovereignty during the colonial period, as it skillfully navigated the pressures from both British and French colonial empires. However, with the onset of World War II and the weakening of European powers, Thailand saw an opportunity to revise its borders and reclaim territories lost to French Indochina and British Burma.

Prime Minister Phibunsongkhram's Role
General Plaek Phibunsongkhram, who became the Prime Minister of Thailand in 1938, was a nationalist and militarist keen on modernizing the country. Inspired by fascist regimes in Germany and Italy, Phibun admired their nationalism and development models. He initiated several cultural reforms to foster a sense of Thai nationalism and independence.
