Egalitarian Capitalism: Making sense of an oxymoron. With Gavin Oldham (Share Foundation) et al.

Why you should watch: Gavin Oldham has spent a long career in the City promoting wider share ownership and more responsible capitalism - particularly focusing on young people from deprived communities, including children in care. He was a driving force behind child trust funds and behind PFEG. Having sold The Share Centre to Interactive Investor last year, he is branching out - as one wag put it, 'going the whole Piketty'. He is currently working with Cambridge to set up a programme on egalitarian capitalism, and he himself is pressing for Big Tech companies to reward customers with equity. All very ambitious stuff - but a (fairly) logical extension of his earlier interests. He doesn't get an entirely easy ride in this video from his friends at UKSA, but there is no doubt that this is an area where there is plenty of room for radical thought.

Gavin Oldham is chairman and founder of the Share Foundation, the aims of which are to relieve poverty among young people and to advance their education so as to encourage self-sufficiency. He is also the founder of Share Radio and of The Share Centre, which he sold to II in 2020. Before establishing The Share Centre, he played a major role in democratising UK share ownership by setting up Barclayshare.

Malcolm Hurlston is the interim chair of the UK Shareholders' Association. He is a former chairman of the Student Loans Company, and the founder of the UK's consumer credit counselling services.

John Hunter is the former chairman of UKSA, and presently a director.

Sue Milton is the external relations director at UKSA, and an authority on corporate governance.
