“But Jesus called them to Himself and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and those who are great exercise authority over them. Yet it shall not be so among you; but whoever desires to become great among you, let him be your servant. And whoever desires to be first among you, let him be your servant— just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.” (Matthew 20:25-28)“

Dr. Robert Clinton, a senior professor of leadership at the School of Intercultural Studies at Fuller Theological Seminary, defines leadership as “A dynamic process in which a man or a woman with a God-given capacity influences a specific group of God’s people toward His purposes for the group. Many who are called to lead may not have formal titles such as pastor or director. They may be Sunday school teachers, small group leaders, or lay people functioning in any number of other leadership capacities.”

Since leadership is about influence, whenever any follower of Christ is influencing anyone else such as his or her family, friends, or co-workers, they are in essence exercising a measure of leadership. We can all benefit from learning leadership lessons and principles, not just those in formal leadership positions.

A.W.Tozer wrote “I believe that it might be accepted as a fairly reliable rule of thumb that the man who is ambitious to lead is disqualified as a leader. The Church of the Firstborn is no place for the demagogue or the petty religious dictator. The true leader will have no wish to lord it over God’s heritage, but will be humble, gentle, self- sacrificing, and altogether as ready to follow as to lead.”
