The HIV ancestor virus has been snipped from monkeys using “genetic scissors” in a breakthrough that could lead to a cure in humans.

Researchers managed to remove SIV (simian immunodeficiency virus) in cells and tissues in rhesus macaques using genetic editing. Scientists now hope a similar technique can be used to permanently remove HIV from humans.

Dr David Bull and Dr Renee Hoenderkamp speak with an ambassador of Saving Lives HIV charity, Peter Bates, about what this means to people currently living with HIV.
