Philippine Coast Guard Interested in Acquiring Australian Patrol Vessels.
Manila - The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has expressed interest in purchasing at least two 39.5-meter Guardian-class patrol vessels from Australian shipbuilder Austal as part of its fleet modernization and expansion efforts.
These vessels are slightly smaller than the Japanese-built 44-meter Parola-class multi-role response vessels that have been used to escort Philippine Navy supply vessels in supplying BRP Sierra Madre in Ayungin Shoal against Chinese Coast Guard and Chinese Maritime Militia vessels.
There is no information yet on the purchase scheme of the vessel, whether through a direct purchase, an official development assistance grant, or a loan from Australia. Which Austal shipyard will build the vessel is also unknown, although it is likely that the Austal Balamban yard in Cebu will be used as the Philippine government supports local construction.
