Over the last 12-18 months, I've been increasingly negative about McLaren road cars... so much so that Tony and I actually recorded a special episode of our podcast talking about all the issues we've experienced with McLarens. However, I feel like it's time to give the brand a second chance and spending 4 days with a 2021 720S Spider felt like a great place to start.

A lot of my frustrations over the past few years have come from the apparent lack of build quality of McLaren cars. My own 540C and many other McLaren cars I've driven have been plagued with electronic and mechanical problems that feel like could have been easily rectified.

So why give them a second chance? Since our McLaren special podcast came out, a number of McLaren owners got in touch saying they were fed up with all the negativity online about the cars and they wanted to let me know they were having great experiences with their own McLarens. On top of that, McLaren themselves got in touch and said they had been working hard to rectify some of the issues I had mentioned and so wanted to get me back in some cars to see if I could notice and appreciate the changes.
