8 things to AVOID telling a Car Dealer:
1. How soon you intend on purchasing or need a car. “Definitely not today, but very soon OR After I’m done shopping around a bit.”
2. If you’re the only decision maker. I tell car dealers I’m married sometimes just for the hell of it. One time I told one I’m on my way to pickup my kid from school. (pssst.. I don’t even have kids) BUT THEY DONT NEED TO KNOW THAT!
3. “I’m flexible” - or any phrase really that is making you seem laid back or making them feel as though “they can take it easy”. If you didn’t have a specific color in mind, pick one, and only be flexible when they raise the actual issue.
4. That’s the ONLY car you’re looking at. Always have some other car you need to check out first before making up your mind.
5. Your actual budget. This could shoot you in the foot if a lesser number was achievable. Think about it, what are you gonna say when they beat your intended number by like $10 bucks? Always shoot a number $50-$100/month less than your maximum.
6. Your permanent contact information. Use a email/burner phone number you’ll be using specifically for the car shopping process. What you want to do is, at the very end of the deal, change your contact info when you’re about to sign ask the finance manager to change all your information so you receive important communication.
7. How long you plan on keeping the car. If the finance managers asks you this, it’s to pressure you into buying extended care and vehicle protection products. When you tell them forever or at least 5 years, they see an opportunity to offer you literally everything they sell. Tell them you’re not sure and you’ll likely revisit the idea in about 3 years or when the warranty is about to expire.
8. Never say: “I don’t want to waste your time”... When I hear a serious buyers/customers say this it’s a little irritating because it makes me feel like you don’t want the car when in fact, you’re actually worried you are holding me up. This can make things ugly because now, it will make a dealer question if he/she should even continue making an effort regardless of his or her time.
