Suzerain is a critically overlooked game in the very niche genre of political games.
But there are reasons as to why it may be overlooked. It is not so much a game in the traditional sense, but more of a text-based, political roleplaying simulator where you get to shape the fate of a fictitious country in a fictitious early Cold-War setting.
You will be faced with many challenges and the choices you make will truly matter.
And it is not like The Walking Dead where the outcome is almost always the same despite the choices you’ve made along the way. In this game, you choose a path and can make all the relevant decisions to try and stay on the path or stray from it. Leading your country into economic recovery or a disastrous war. Reforming it to be a proper representative democracy or installing yourself as the next authoritarian leader.

Whereas you do have graphics to look at, mainly in the shape of an interactive map and with a variety of tolls at your disposal such as a ledger, all of the real gameplay takes place in the text-based events of the game. And this may be the most off-putting element of the game. Most people will likely find it boring.
Even with the music being spectacular, there is little other stimuli to be found than the story itself – and the choices you make.
It is a game that does require you to pay a lot of attention and do a lot of thinking. If you don’t, you may very well end up making a string of disastrous mistakes.

But if you do enjoy games where decisions truly matter.
Games where you have to do a lot of thinking.
Games where you are much more likely to fail than to succeed.
Games that feel incredibly realistic.
Games that centre around politics.

Then I can fervently recommend this game. It is quite possibly the best political simulator ever made.
