A side of town that is not so glorified in Oakland is the southern end. Once you get to Merritt neighborhood and beyond, things get a little more ________. (you pick the descriptor). If you go as for as Fruitvale, and you notice the sun going down, turn around. You've gone to far. Turn around. Call your mom and tell her you're coming straight home. Curfew is curfew.

on the other hand, if you work your way a bit north, toward Grand Lake and Piedmont District, and find yourself in Adam's Point, feel good. You are in the safe zone.

I don't get it. Oakland has the great feel during the day. People are exercising around the Lake Merritt, going to shows at Grand Lake and Fox Theater, or enjoying a delicious meal in Chinatown, downtown or even uptown. Dave's Hot Chicken is the real deal people. Come sundown, get your ass home.
