Here is a fascinating nugget on Srinivasan Ramanujan, the famous mathematician and his connection to Madras (Chennai) and how he went from working at the Madras Port Trust to Cambridge University to pursue his research in mathematics with Prof. G.H.Hardy.

Who encouraged Ramanujan from his workplace at Madras Port Trust to go to Cambridge University? This is where Prof Shailaja Venkatsubramanyan shares how Ramanujan worked with her great grandfather Mr. Narayan Iyer at Madras Port Trust. Mr. Iyer encouraged Ramanujan to go to England to pursue his deep interest in math. Sadly, the brilliant mathematician passed away at the age of 32 years. Ramanujan's mother and wife continued to visit Mr. Iyer's house for many years after his death shares Shailaja.

This is a highlight of a longer conversation with Shailaja from our #WomeninSTEM series that you can watch.
