Synopsis
This is the first special drama reviving the character of Nemuri Kyoshiro, played by Masakazu Tamura, following his popularity in the TV series. Showcasing the Engetsu swordsmanship style without CG, the drama captures Kyoshiro's cold precision. On a rainy night, Kyoshiro encounters a samurai's son and learns of a troubled household. He intervenes to save the mother, Shizu (Hiromi Takikawa), from her husband's attack, accidentally causing the husband's death. Kyoshiro prevents Shizu from suicide and agrees to protect her. He soon finds himself embroiled in a conspiracy involving official secrets and is injured while defending Shizu. Seeking refuge in a temple, Kyoshiro discovers Shizu's past humiliation by Ieyoshi, the Shogun's heir. He learns from Senjuro Takebe, a servant of the former shogun Mizuno Echizennomori, about the corrupt influence of Sano Higo-mori (Kei Sato) on Ieyoshi. Determined to resolve the situation, Kyoshiro sets out for Kyoto to confront the true Ieyoshi.

About Nemuri Kyoshiro
Nemuri Kyoshiro, the main character of Shibata Renzaburo's samurai novel series, began serialization in 1956 in Weekly Shincho as Nemuri Kyoshiro Burai Hikae. This series, alongside Gomi Yasuyuki's Yagyu Bugeicho sparked a samurai boom and led to numerous adaptations in film, television, and theatre.

Kyoshiro is a complex character, blending the nihilistic swordsman archetype, originated from Kyokutei Bakin's Nanso Satomi Hakkenden, with Shibata's distinctive dandyism. Born of a Portuguese Jesuit and a Japanese woman, Kyoshiro embodies a sense of nihilism and a cold brutality, often killing without remorse. He carries the famed Musou Masamune sword, historically linked to Toyotomi Hideyori, and employs a unique sword technique known as Engetsu Sappo. As noted by film critic Sato Tadao, this series breaks from traditional Kabuki, where romantic roles are reserved for handsome men and heroic figures typically avoid romantic entanglements, contrasting with Western ideals of chivalry.
