Photo opportunity at Taliban rear artillery positions on the old road 12 miles north of Kabul in November 1996 is rudely interrupted by a Northern Alliance air strike. In the immediate aftermath of "outgoing attracts incoming" veteran war photographers Dylan Martinez (Reuters Chief Photographer) and Santiago Lyon (former AP Director of Photography) wisely decide discretion is the better part of valour, and retreat to the relative safety of their base in recently Taliban-occupied Kabul. The bright yellow taxis acted as clear markers of Taliban positions, visible to attacking Northern Alliance aircraft - where there were journalists, there were Taliban fighters. In those days, the Taliban were generous with offers of cups of tea, causal conversation and enjoyed the media attention, sometimes playing up for the cameras - but too many little yellow taxi cabs giving the game away made them nervous. And when surprised by an attack, they became very jittery and suddenly less hospitable. If Santiago Lyon said it was time to go ... it was definitely TIME TO GO!
