Gout is a type of inflammatory arthritis, which usually starts with bouts of severe swelling, redness and pain at the big toe, but can affect any joints — or multiple joints — at the same time. People with gout experience flare-ups, known as gout attacks, which can be extremely painful and disruptive. But there’s more to gout than just the attacks.
