With a journalism career spanning more than four decades and three media—newspaper, television and radio—Bob Ray Sanders was the first African American television journalist at KERA in Dallas.

After graduating from the University of North Texas with a degree in journalism, Sanders launched his career at the Ft. Worth Star Telegram. He then joined KERA-TV in 1972 where he appeared on the innovative Newsroom. Eventually he was promoted to vice-president and station manager for KERA-TV. He also hosted and produced the station’s award-winning program, News Addition. He later served 25 years as the associate editor and senior columnist at the Ft. Worth Star-Telegram.

Garnering five Press Club of Dallas Katie Awards and numerous recognitions, Sanders is one of our state’s most trusted broadcasters.

Former congressman Alan Steelman notes, “Bob Ray Sanders has lived a consequential life. As a journalist, his life has been dedicated to reporting on the events of our time without fear or favor. Afflict the comfortable and comfort the afflicted is the guiding mantra of responsible journalism. Along with his pioneering colleagues on Newsroom at KERA he brought this brand of reporting to a city and region not always served in the most unbiased way. His career is one worthy of emulation by all young aspiring journalists.”
