How to dethatch a lawn
1. scalp mow the lawn. the lawn needs to be mowed below 2". this will help the dethatch rake or the dethatching machine get to the soil
2. use the dethatcher at the heighest setting and do some test strips. if you don't see a lot of live tissue being removed go one level lower.
3. dethatch the lawn a minimum of 2 passes. this lawn I did 4 passes with the dethatcher. Alternating directions on each pass is highly recommended. be sure to clean up the yard debris between passes. I prefer to use a blower to blow the clippings off the surface into piles.
4. run two passes using the scarifier cartridge and cleanup the debris.
5. fertilize the lawn. I prefer to use a fertilizer with the beginning numbers between a 17 and 27 but in all reality most fertilizers will be fine as long as you follow the label.
6. optional overseeding. I like to take the opportunity and seed the grass.

6 weeks later the lawn will look fantastic.
