Retrofit Talks is an online series of live talks that connects professionals to discuss residential retrofit. Produced as part of Retrofit 23, this series showcases the latest research and projects in architectural practice, providing case studies and solutions for retrofit of homes. The talks feature guest speakers presenting their project followed by an interactive Q&A. Join us for these engaging sessions and gain insights into the innovative approaches to retrofitting homes.

This talk, the second in the series, is delivered by Ben Hair of KnoxBhavan.

KnoxBhavan have developed KnoxBhavanenergy (KBe), a carbon analysis system for completed projects and a library of tried and tested construction build-ups. It is a design tool for measuring and reducing embodied carbon in all construction projects.

In developing KBe KnoxBhavan have learnt just how challenging retrofit and the climate crisis are from the unique perspective of a small practice. Using the research to test our climate ambitions on live projects highlights the conflicts between existing regulation, construction finance and sustainability.

This talk combines a mixture of KBe quantitative analysis, case study buildings from KnoxBhavan portfolio, and aspirations for where the research can go next.
