In this video I am going share what I believe to be the best alternative to Apple’s Lightning Cable.
I generally speak highly of Apple product build quality and do so for good reason. Whether it be the iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch and MacBook’s, I have found these to generally hold up well overtime and last many years - part of the reason why they tend to hold their value well compared to other tech products. However, unfortunately the same cannot be said for their cables. In general I take good care of my electronics but even for me, these cables start to show discolouration, chipping and even tearing in less than a year. Not great when the iPhone these cables charge can last 5 years. For the longest time I have been buying new cables, thinking these would work best and after hearing some horror stories of friends who used cheap third part cables that either broke in a week or actually caught fire. Then after some research I came across this: Amazon Basics Nylon Braided Lightning to USB A Cable. Amazon has several models that all very slightly, this particular version comes in 3 sizes: 30.4cm, 91.2cm, 1.82m. And in 4 colours: Red, Dark grey, Pink, Siver. I have been using the 91.2cm Silver and the 1.82m Dark grey versions for over 2 years now. The different colours are a nice touch, allowing the cable to blend in better with the furniture that you have in the room. The cable is braided which looks and feels great - this will also help with durability. Importantly, all these cables are Apple MFI certified, what this means is the chip inside these cables is from Apple, and therefore guarantees that it will work with all Apple devices that this it will work safely. Just as Apple’s own lighting cable would. Now I want to make clear Amazon’s lighting cable is not the only one that has MFI certification. Finally the cables come with a lifetime warranty, I haven’t had to use this yet - but is good to have. So how much do they cost and are they wroth it? The current prices on Amazon range from 10 to13 dollars depending on the length you get. This already is half of what Apple’s lighting cable costs. But now for the main question, how do they hold up? I have been using both of these cables for 2 years now and the Dark grey version I have been using every night to charge my phone, is great by the way to have a longer cable. In bed when I use my phone I will plug it in and then use my phone like this, where I rest the weight of the phone on the bend of the cable. I know, not great. But I have been doing this most nights of the past 2 years and as you can see, even with this rough use the cable only shows minimal signs of wear. The other cable that I too have been using for 2 years, I do not bend in the way I do the other and this looks near pristine. The cables also click into place just like Apple’s lighting cable does and maintain strong connection. Honesty, these cables have replaced all of my and my girlfriend’s lighting cables, as they last longer and are more cost effective. Again, they look and feel great, cost half the price and so far last at least twice as long as Apple’s original lighting cables - making it very easy for me to recommend.
