This winter, we visited North American Coal in North Dakota to explore how one of the most unique trucks in the world operates—the Kress Coal Hauler.

Mines must transport coal from the cuts to the power plants they feed, which often requires hauling distances of many miles. Since coal is so much lighter than dirt, using standard haul trucks designed for rocks and earth is inefficient. Traditional trucks will never reach capacity no matter how much coal you stack in their beds.

Enter the Kress Coal Hauler—a giant belly dump truck specifically designed for coal. It can haul the same tonnage as the other mining trucks on site but over twice the total volume.

After loaders or excavators load the truck with coal, it can haul a full load to the plant at over 40 MPH. When ready to dump, it opens giant doors on the bottom of the truck, allowing the coal to dump out.
