How much does it REALLY cost to charge an electric vehicle in the UK in 2022? Electric car charging costs have gone up rapidly this year and things are about to get worse!

When calculating electric car charging costs you must take into account the size of the car's battery and where it is most likely to be charged. Public chargers are a lot more expensive than charging an EV at home.

For example, if you want to know how much does it cost to fully charge a Tesla at home, then you take the size of the Tesla battery in kWh and multiply it by the kWh electricity price.

Whether you are charging a Tesla, Polestar, Kia, Hyundai, Volkswagen or some other electric car, I think it is fair to say that despite recent increases EV charging costs are still much lower than filling up traditional ICE cars.

Electricity prices have increased substantially in 2022 and the UK government energy price cap is likely to go even higher this winter, however, oil prices are also extremely high so there are still big savings to be had by switching to an EV.

If you look at petrol vs electric car running costs, I think it is very likely that charging an EV will remain cheaper than filling up a petrol car for the foreseeable future.
