Less than 18 months ago, Stef Burgon and her husband, Simon Hunt, had high-octane jobs in Dubai. They rented a modern first-floor studio flat opposite that gravity-defying beacon of 21st-century engineering, the Burj Khalifa, and could wear T-shirts most days. Now they are the owners of a 16th-century stone castle where the view from their bedroom window is of ancient beech trees and the even older Kilmartin Glen, site of one of the most important concentrations of neolithic and Bronze Age remains in Scotland. What’s more, the mercury rarely nudges above 20C.
