The rules we share in this video on proper table etiquettes will guide you on your next formal/informal dining. These rules will help you feel more comfortable and confident on the dining table.

Use them to create a lasting impression and a successful dining.

First of all, your table manners speak volumes about your refinement and it's often interpreted as a sign of character. It's not at all about being snobby or showing off but it rather shows respect which your host and your dining partners will greatly appreciate.

It's very important to keep in mind that proper table manners always help you and never hurt you. The good thing is they can be learned and it is never too late to do so.

So what are table manners?

I suggest you turn your cell phone ringer off when you enter someone else's home and put your phone in your pocket when you're with the guests. Don't leave your phone on the table because you are much more likely to pick it up and look at it which is impolite In the presence of other people.

►If the table is all set, you don't just walk in and sit down. Wait to be seated or wait for the queue of the host, elders, or if they sit, you can sit as well.

►Ideally, you should sit up straight but comfortably, don't slouch, or cross your arms, or put your arms on table, hands on plate or play with cutlery or sit as you would on your couch while watching TV.

►If there's a napkin on the plate, put it on your lap right away. Place napkin such that corners face upwards. You can use corners to wipe your mouth during or after eating.

►Let's take a look at the table setting. In a dining table, there will always be at least a plate, a knife, fork and spoon. If dessert will be served, you'll find either a little fork (dessert fork) or a spoon (dessert spoon) on the top side of the plate, parallel to each other but in opposite direction. On the top right of the plate, you'll likely find a water glass.

►When it's time to eat, always start by reciting Bismillāhi r-raḥmāni r-raḥīm and only start eating when everyone else has been served and a host or hostess starts to take their fork and take the lead. It is very impolite and sometimes even rude to just dig into your plate of food while the others are still empty-handed.

►When you finish eating, place your cutlery straight and recite Alhamdulilahil ladhi at’amana, wasaqana, waj’alna min-al Muslimeen.
