In this video, I discuss how oxidation is a normal process that occurs in the body as a result of different chemical reactions. Think of a piece of fruit. As it ripens it becomes sweet and edible - this is as a result of normal oxidation but left too long and it turns brown and rancid – this is a result of too much oxidation.

Free radicals are unstable, angry molecules because they are missing an electron and they can cause havoc in our bodies if they become unregulated. Antioxidants have an extra electron, so they help to stabilise free radicals by donating this free electron. When there are more free radicals than there are antioxidants then it leads to oxidative stress.

A little bit of oxidative stress in the short term is ok because it stimulates the immune system and the growth of new cells but too much and it can start causing damage to cells, proteins and DNA and can lead to chronic inflammation.
