Gliomas are a type of brain tumour that can seriously impact a patient's motor skills and cognitive functions depending on their location in the brain. At Narayana Hospital, Jaipur, Dr Nitin Bhakal, a Consultant Neurosurgeon, recently showcased the advantages of awake craniotomy, an innovative surgical technique, in treating such challenging cases.

Suraiya, a patient from Ganga Nagar, experienced sudden dizziness and headaches, which led to a discovery of weakness in her right limbs. An MRI revealed a glioma situated in a critical area of her brain that controlled speech, comprehension, and right-side body movement. Traditional surgery risks severe side effects like paralysis or loss of speech.

Opting for an awake craniotomy allowed us to remove the tumour effectively while minimising risks. During this procedure, Suraiya was awake, enabling continuous communication and interaction. This approach ensured that we could monitor her speech and motor functions in real time, preserving crucial brain areas and avoiding potential long-term disabilities.

The surgery was a success, and Suraiya recovered remarkably well. She regained full functionality without complications and returned to her daily activities shortly after the procedure. Suraiya's case is a testament to modern neurosurgery's possibilities, allowing patients to maintain a quality of life even in the face of serious health challenges.
