This lecture is about intentionality. Intentionality is a mental state that is directed at or about objects and states of affairs in the world. It can be conscious or unconscious. The speaker argues that unconscious intentional states are still mental because we understand them as the sort of thing which could be conscious.

The speaker uses language as a way to explain intentionality. He says that there are structural similarities between the structure of our intentionality and the structure of our speech acts. Speech acts can be true or false, but they can also be orders, commands, promises, etc. These speech acts have a direction of fit. The world either matches the speech act (e.g., the detective’s list) or the speech act needs to match the world (e.g., the husband’s list).

The speaker also discusses how emotions relate to intentionality. He says that all emotions contain beliefs and desires. For example, to be ashamed of something, you must believe that you did something wrong and that it is undesirable.
Overall, the lecture argues that intentionality is the fundamental way that we relate to the world as conscious agents.
