The Universal Declaration of Human Rights was adopted by the UN General Assembly on December 10, 1948, proclaiming the inherent rights and freedoms of individuals regardless of nationality, place of residence, sex, national or ethnic origin, colour, religion, language, or any other status. The principal author of the declaration was a Canadian, John Peters Humphrey.
