Performing Umrah is a deeply spiritual journey, filled with moments of reflection and devotion. One of the significant acts of virtue for a man or boy after completing Umrah is to shave their hair. When I first booked my Umrah, thoughts of shaving my hair occupied my mind, contemplating the idea of being without it. However, the thought of performing this act solely for the sake of Allah quickly overshadowed any concerns. Some suggest merely trimming the hair short, but I saw this as an opportunity to fully embrace the blessings of the journey. Despite growing my hair for four years, the weight of anticipation and reverence lifted as I approached the act of shaving. It's an experience that transcends vanity and becomes a profound symbol of submission and humility.

Amidst the anticipation, familial voices questioning the necessity of shaving echoed, yet the transformative power of the Kaaba's presence silenced any doubts. My first Umrah experience involved shaving my long hair, a symbolic gesture of spiritual renewal. Later, during a subsequent Umrah dedicated to my deceased grandad, having recently shaved, the barber still removed whatever stubble remained. Returning home, I purchased a head-shaving machine, opting to keep my hair short, relishing in the newfound lightness. Each glance in the mirror serves as a reminder of my journey—before and after, symbolizing personal growth and spiritual awakening.

While hair shaving is specific to men, women are encouraged to trim a thumbnail's worth—a reminder that every individual's journey is unique. May Allah grant us the opportunity to perform Umrah repeatedly, each experience enriching our souls and strengthening our faith.
