The inventor of the original MINI, Sir Alec Issigonis, would almost certainly have a few issues with the MINI Countryman, whose size is anything but mini. But to its credit the high-performance JCW or John Cooper Works version retains the fun-to-drive attitude of its forebears.

In fact, the MINI JCW Countryman is the most powerful MINI ever built, running the same ballistic 2.0-litre BMW engine as the ultra-rare MINI GP, punching out 225kW and 450Nm. But unlike the MINI GP hatchback, the bigger, heavier, roomier MINI JCW Countryman actually has back seats and also a clever AWD system that gives it plenty of rip and grip.

If performance is your thing, then the Countryman's 5.1 second 0-100km/h sprint will catch your eye. And while the Countryman may be seen as a blight by fans of the classic Mini, it's a well-rounded everyday transport that doubles as an off-road hot hatch.
