Ring in the new year with these New Year affirmations to help set your intentions for a positive year. The coming year is full of mystery. And positive affirmations can prime you to feel hopeful about what is around the corner.

Affirmations are a powerful way to prime yourself for positive thoughts. Of course, it's not necessary to have positive thoughts for your year to be good. But affirmations can help nudge you into a more positive mindset and positive energy.

I don’t think by repeating affirmations we’re ‘reprogramming our mind’ as some people suggest. But there are a few things going on.

- You’re giving yourself hope that there’s a different way things can be. In other words, you’re setting yourself up for what Professor of Education Dr Jo Boaler calls a ‘limitless mind’.
- Your neurons (nerve cells) can change on a daily basis. So you have opportunities to change not only what you learn and think but your physical body too.
- You’re taking time to speak kindly to yourself.
- Positive affirmations can interrupt your natural thinking style, which may normally include more negative thoughts. And thinking positively can change your body physiologically.

So, affirmations can have a place in dealing with a chronic disease and/or anxiety.  But especially self-compassionate affirmations, where you replace your inner critical voice with a kinder, more friendly version. 

At the beginning of the year, we are tempted to set our expectations way too high and get frustrated when we can't attain the perfect results. But for this video, we're not digging into goals or new years resolutions because you don't need to accomplish big goals to feel accomplished and content.

I hope some of these affirmations resonate with you and I wish you a happy and healthy new year.
