When changing glow plugs, it's all about the right moves. Workshop employees need to be careful as they do so and use the right tools. Glow plug threads can get stuck. If they break, their removal is highly time-consuming. Furthermore, there is always the risk of metal chips falling into the cylinder. For this reason, some well-proven tips and tricks can be used to simplify the replacement of glow plugs. This includes preparation tasks such as applying some penetration oil onto the thread. After a short time of exposure with a heated engine, it is noticeably easier to remove the glow-plug. The most important thing is to use a torque wrench and apply the correct loosening torque. In fact, if the torque is exceeded, the glow plug can be damaged, with serious consequences for the engine.

However, the right tool is not only important when loosing and removing the glow plug, but also when inserting the new one, you can make a lot of mistakes. Bosch recommends using a flexible magnetic pick-up tool, which prevents the glow plug from falling into the shaft. Cleanliness when changing glow plugs is also important to avoid contamination of the combustion chamber.
Bosch recommends replacing glow plugs as complete sets. All of the glow plugs of each engine are subject to the same strains – if one of the glow plugs fails, the remaining ones are very likely to fail shortly afterwards. Replacing them all at once, reduces the repair time at the workshop thus saving both time and money.
