No longer an awkward hatchback, the XC40-based EV is Volvo’s answer to the Audi Q4 e-tron Sportback, Volkswagen ID.5 GTX and Tesla Model Y.

The performance numbers are certainly impressive. It’ll go from 0-62mph in 4.7 seconds, making it one of the fastest electric crossovers arounds, courtesy of a twin-motor setup that delivers 408hp across all four wheels. The battery, meanwhile, offers up to 273 miles of range on a single charge. It’s not class leading, but it makes up for it (well, a little bit) with a charging rate of 150kW. It’s also only available to purchase online, and you can get it on a subscription plan: £679 per month for three years, or £779pm for flexible ownership. Sounds good, right? Well, here’s what we thought after giving a run in Belgium.
