We stopped at the ATI booth and spoke with, Tom McElligott, an expert in tool changers, we discussed their crucial role in helping us win the FANUC America Corporation Innovative System award for offshore robots. Their tool changers allow robots to seamlessly switch between different tools, enhancing their productivity. This is exemplified by a FANUC arm demonstrating the application of adhesive to an automotive body part using a dispensing head, followed by utilizing ATI's automatic tool change to switch to a flow drill screw head. The tool changers not only facilitate mechanical coupling and uncoupling but also pass various utilities like power, air, and fluid signals. These customized solutions are crafted based on specific requirements, utilizing a range of building blocks developed over 30 years in the industry. The tool changers' durability is demonstrated by their ability to withstand seawater contact, making them suitable for harsh environments commonly found in welding applications. This technology played a pivotal role in deploying robots on drill ships for the first time, showcasing its significance in the field.
