When Volkswagen launched its three-row Atlas for 2018, the question on many folk’s minds was, who wants to buy a really big Volkswagen? Turns out quite a few, as this capacious V-dub has been a runaway success for the automaker. Another question arose when Volkswagen pulled the wraps off the 2020 Atlas Cross Sport. Who wants to buy a swoopy two-row version of the Atlas? Same answer. The Cross Sport currently accounts for about one third of Atlas sales. Maybe not such a surprise, considering the niche popularity of these premium SUV-coupe thingies. We can thank the 2007 BMW X6 for getting the ball rolling, or the angle grinder cutting, as it were.

Like the Audi Q8, the Atlas Cross Sport eschews the dramatic fastback rooflines of the BMW and Mercedes-Benz offerings for a more sensible profile. And sensible this vehicle is. Riding on the VW Group’s corporate expandable MQB platform, the Chattanooga-built Cross Sport shares the three-row Atlas’ wheelbase and track, yet is marginally shorter and lower.
