The following technique will help you navigate your next adventure using your wristwatch. Bear in mind that seasonal time change and location may influence the technique.

If you’re near the equator:
Finding North or South can be challenging. Use the compass bezel of the Khaki Field Expedition for East-West direction. Note that the watch method may not be reliable due to short sun shadows. The sun's cycle is 12 hours, and it consistently rises in the East, worldwide.

If it’s 6 p.m.:
The sun points West (where it sets).

If it’s 6 a.m.:
The sun points East (where it rises)

If it’s noon:
The sun is considered South at noon in the Northern Hemisphere. The sun points South, and your shadow indicates North. When using daylight saving time, imagine a line from the hour hand to 1 o'clock for accurate orientation.

If it’s nighttime:
Find North in the Northern Hemisphere using the North Star (not visible in the Southern Hemisphere).

Tips for compass navigation:
• Overcast skies? No problem! Find an open area, hold up a straight object for a shadow even in cloudy conditions.
• Don't have a watch? Draw one on paper; the technique relies on knowing the time.

Why aren't the triangles on the bezel aligned at 12 o'clock or full hours?
Take a look at this quick comparison between a wind rose and the Khaki Field Expedition's bezel for an explanation. The triangles on the bezel mark NE, SE, SW & NW. With the 60 minute bezel, the triangles are positioned between two minutes in a 45 degrees angle between two cardinal directions.
