I just celebrated a birthday! A big one: 43! Sometimes I can't believe it, and then sometimes I can. I believe it when I see the spots on my face that are a true testament to the years I've lived. They represent all the sun, life experiences, emotional ups and downs and of course hormonal and temperature shifts I've been through in my life. That might sound odd, but that's often a combination of the multiple sources of melasma. So my question is: Got Melasma, Hyperpigmentation & Spots? Because I do too! I made this testimonial video for my melasma tribe out there looking for solutions and more education on how to properly treat these spotted areas on our skin. I've been using Dr. Koo Skincare products for about 2 years and I really love how they're formulated for mature skin as well as sensitive skin. With the 3 levels of Pigment Refiner by Dr. Koo, you're sure to find the intensity that works for you. I actually use all 3 in different stages.

When you're treating for melasma, just remember, stay out of the sun, remove yourself from excessively hot environments (hot yoga, saunas, etc.). Come prepared to workouts where you may overheat with cold water and ice that you can cool off with on your face and melasma prone areas. And know that without proper treatment or changes to your lifestyle, it probably will get worse. As I mention in this video, it may never completely go away even with treatment.

The goal here is developing melasma reducing habits and learning what triggers and darkens your spots. Over the past decade, I've really focused on maintenance in terms of my own melasma spread (which fluctuates based on the season) and I find that having a daily topical skincare regimen massively helps in addition to getting treatments like laser, peels, and other things that I do myself at home (LED light therapy, exfoliation masks, etc.). I've tried it all and I'm always open to experimenting with a new approach but having a good nightly regimen is one of the most important things you can do.

My advice, no matter what treatment route you take, is not to let your melasma condition slide. When I was at my worst with very dark spots, it caused me to feel a certain way about myself that did not help my self-image. But I only had myself to blame for consistently exposing myself to the sun. In college, I spent about 2.5 years going to tanning beds. I still shake my head at this sabotaging behavior. I know it must've contributed to at least a portion of my facial pigmentation now. It's never too late to stop unhealthy behaviors affecting your skin. There IS hope for our melasma tribe! You can lighten these areas and dramatically reduce their visibility and spread. Try Dr. Koo Skincare in your path to even skin tone and better skin health. I'm doing it at 43 years old so I know you can do it too!

XO, Bianca Jade
