The World Around & Future Observatory at the Design Museum present IN FOCUS:RESEARCH.
Speaker Dr Julia King @atjuliaking is an architect, teacher and researcher studying our rapidly urbanizing world through a sharp lens.

Focusing on communities marginalized by expansive urban developments, King’s research has carried her across the globe; from analyzing the impacts of mass-migration on the micro-economies of UK high streets, to designing decentralized sanitation systems for sprawling ad hoc settlements in New Delhi. Wherever these projects lead them, King and her team adopt a methodology of “unlearning”: of leaving behind what they have been taught, to allow themselves to learn from the world anew, working closely with communities to design and test alternative, site-based strategies towards building their own visions for the future.

King practiced as a Policy Fellow at the LSE Cities research center at the London School of Economics for nearly a decade. Earlier this year, she left the university to establish her own practice, Julia King & Associates, where she continues her work to empower diverse voices in design and decision-making through experimental outreach programmes.

Currently, she leads the Apprenticeship in City Design and Young Researcher-in-Residence’ initiatives, which aim to address the exclusion of young people from an increasing number of privatized ‘public’ spaces by engaging these groups through research and build projects. King has received multiple awards including the Emerging Woman Architect of the Year in 2014, and the NLA Award in 2016.
