2024 Mazda2 Hybrid Worthy Fiesta Alternative?

As we all know, the Ford Fiesta is dead, so what if you're on the hunt for a new Supermini, perhaps the new, updated Mazda2 Hybrid could be what you're looking for?

There’s a good chance you’re looking at this car and thinking “hang on, that’s a Toyota Yaris”. You would be correct, the Hybrid version of the Mazda2 uses the Yaris Hybrid platform and running gear. Having said that, look carefully and you will see Mazda has updated the styling to help set it aside a little from its Toyota stablemate.

Predictably you’ll find the same powertrain under the bonnet as the Yaris. It’s a 1.5 litre three-cylinder petrol coupled with a 59Kw electric motor which together offer 116hp, 120Nm of torque, mated to an e-CVT gearbox. 0-62 is likely to be irrelevant to the majority of you watching, but in case you’re really interested it’ll do it in 9.7 seconds and continue to a top speed of 109mph. What you're more like to be interested in is the fuel economy. The 2024 Mazda2 Hybrid can achieve almost 75mpg on a combined run with CO2 emissions as low as 87g/km.

The Mazda2 Hybrid is available four trim levels; Centre-Line, Exclusive-Line, Homura and Homura Plus, with starting prices ranging from £24,130 through to £29,230.

As mentioned, the car shown in this video is the Homura, which has a starting price of £27,280. Standard features include 17” alloys, black accents to the exterior, LED headlights and LED front foglights, wireless phone charging, front sports seats, dual zone climate control, keyless entry, reversing camera, 9” touchscreen with android auto, and Apple CarPlay. Safety systems include e-Call with GPS, blind spot monitoring, road sign assist and dynamic stability control.

However, a similarly specced Toyota Yaris will cost less, and as long as you have the car serviced at a Toyota approved dealer the warranty is longer, which makes choosing the Mazda2 Hybrid a bit of a difficult choice. Since filming I’ve been looking out for Mazda2 Hybrids on the road, but all of them have been wearing the Toyota badge, which I suppose shouldn’t be a surprise.

When it comes to space, the Mazda2 Hybrid offers a boot of 286 litres, which as you would expect is the same as the Yaris, but smaller than rivals such as the VW Polo, Honda Jazz and Renault Clio. Space in the back is you would expect from a supermini, tight for taller adults - I’m 6’2” - but it’ll be fine for occasional use or children. If you want more space in a supermini I’d recommend the SEAT Ibiza or the Honda Jazz.
