Knowing when and how to replace bicycle chain rings can decrease wear on the whole drive train and save you costly road bike or mountain bike cycle repair. We'll show you what to look for wear, when to replace the front chain rings and the quick method for replacement while the crank and bottom bracket are still on the bike.
Check the chain rings for wear whenever doing routine maintenance. Wear is indicated when the teeth become deformed, pointed or exessive variation in height. Loosen and remove the bolts to remove the chainrings. When replacing, the writing on the rings is usually facing out toward you. Inaddition, one side of the teeth is slightly sloped while the other is more steep. It is the steep side that points forward to help drive the chain around.
Note that there is alway some variation to allow smoth shifting. When to replace the cassette or at least check the for cassette wear should also be part of your routine maintenance.
