In the second episode of the Mamluk series, we uncover the story of Sayfuddin Qutuz, a Turkic slave descending from the Anushtegin family that ruled the Khwarezmian Empire. He would later ascend to the throne of Mamluk Egypt and achieve a significant victory over the Mongols in the history-altering Battle of Ayn Jalut, alongside his rival, Baybars al-Bunduqdari. In the first episode, we covered the rise of the Mamluks amidst the events of the 7th Crusade and the eventual downfall of the Ayyubid Empire ( • The 7th Crusade Was A Complete Disast... ). The Battle of Ayn Jalut was a major defeat for the Mongols as it halted their expansion eastwards into Africa and subsequently into Europe, it also marked the beginning of the Mamluk state's emergence as a superpower in the Middle East for the following centuries, until the rise of the Ottomans.
