Hello
It's been a very long time since I did a Hoplite stopmotion. With this brickfilm my nice ancient Lego stuff returned.

Battle part begins on:
6:42

In 490 BC, a legendary battle between the Greeks (Athens and Plataea) and Persians took place in the Bay of Marathon. It was part of Darius the Great's campaign during the Persian Wars. The Persian king wanted revenge on the city state of Athens because they supported the Ionian revolt.

The Greek army, led by Miltiades, was outnumbered at Marathon, but achieved a great victory thanks to the phalanx and a clever flanking maneuver. Their defeat caused the Persians to stop the conquest.

After the Battle of Marathon, a messenger named Phiddipides was sent to Athens to alarm the city's population about the Persian fleet. Apparently he ran the approximately 40 kilometer long route in one go. He was just able to declare victory in Athens before he collapsed dead.

This historical event is the origin of today's Olympic discipline "marathon race".
