The story of Seven Nation Army began, as most great stories do: in a bar, right before a soccer match.

It’s hard to remember a time before “Seven Nation Army”, its immediately identifiable riff has transformed into an all-purpose stadium chant. But, 15 years ago, it was just the very good, enormously catchy lead single from The White Stripes’ fourth album, Elephant. It's not a song, it's a phenomenon.

This phenomenon has its roots in a UEFA Champions League soccer game in Italy in October 2003, during which fans of Belgium's Club Brugge KV carried the riff from a bar to the stadium. They began singing the riff in a game against Italy's A.C. Milan. In an unlikely event, Brugge won against the European giants AC Milan. The song subsequently became the team's "unofficial sports anthem".

This is what Jack White had to say when after this song became a sensation overnight!
"I am honored that the Italians have adopted this song as their own. Nothing is more beautiful in music than when people embrace a melody and allow it to enter the pantheon of folk music."

And now, "Seven Nation Army" has become a global sports anthem, commonly appearing in audience chants in which a series of "oh" sounds or the name of an athlete is sung to the tune of the song's riff.

The usage of Seven Nation Army as a soccer chant is just as high now as it ever was. So sit back and watch why Seven Nation Army by The White Stripes became a phenomenon!
