Can you make a microphone from scratch using Lego, some magnets, and some wire? Let’s find out!

So what exactly is a microphone? Well in a sense, a microphone is essentially just a speaker, but in reverse. And now that I’ve made some speakers from Lego, it seems reasonable that a microphone could be just around the corner.

A microphone is a lot more sensitive than a speaker, requiring only a few millivolts to generate a signal. When a coil of wire is oscillated near a magnet, it will generate an AC signal. This is translated as an audio signal by your computer. So if we can create a small AC signal by attaching a small coil of wire to a membrane that can vibrate, when we speak, the sound waves will cause the membrane (and coil) to oscillate near the magnet, generating an audio signal.

Sounds easy in principle … but let’s see what we can build using Lego technic!
