What if you were the chosen one?

What if you were the one destined to change everything?

That your life isn’t like everyone else's, that your purpose is something more important, more profound.

That you are part of a prophecy destined to come true, destined to change everything.

These are the characteristics we commonly associate with the idea of the chosen one.

It’s an idea that resonates deeply with the majority of people.

But why?

We see it all the time in movies and in literature.

In Dune Part 1 & 2 we see Paul Atreides ascend and embrace his role as the Kwisatz Haderach, a prophesied messianic figure brought about by the Bene Gesserit sisterhood's breeding program.

In The Matrix we follow Neo as he discovers the real-world and his place in it as the The One, prophesied to end the war between the humans and the machines.

In Harry Potter, we watch Harry grow and fulfil his prophecy as the one destined to defeat Lord Voldemort.

In Star Wars, we watch Anakin Skywalker (The Chosen One) descend into the dark side of the force and eventually become Darth Vader. Although he fulfils his prophecy as the one destined to bring balance to the force by destroying Palpatine, it's not in the way everyone around him expected.

All these characters embody the characteristics of 'The Chosen One', but why do we find these stories so compelling?

Why do they touch us so deeply?
