Decades after Snow White, the first Disney animated princess was introduced on the big screen, the company is still churning out new royals. In fact, princesses are one of the things Disney is known for.

Its princess characters are etched in our collective memory and beloved by fans everywhere. Like many Disney movies though, the source material behind Disney’s most recent princess stories isn’t as innocent as the movies it inspired. In this video, we’re exploring the surprising origins of the five most recent Disney princess movies. We’ll explore the Grimm’s fairy tales that are the origins for 2009’s The Princess and the Frog and 2010’s Tangled, the Hans Christian Anderson story that filmmakers adapted for 2013’s Frozen, and the folklore and mythology behind 2012’s Brave and 2016’s Moana. We’ll fill you in on all the things Disney would prefer you didn’t know about the stories on which their stories are based.
