A woman wants to know if her recent realisation could be called an awakening experience. Also, what can she do to adjust to this new understanding, and how can she ensure that she does not lose herself again?

Rupert says: ‘Yes, technically, in the context of the tradition that we explore here, your experience is what is referred to as awakening. But actually, you’ll never hear me use that phrase unless somebody uses it in a question. But what does awakening mean? It means you are beginning to recognise that what you essentially are is not the layers of thoughts, feelings, sensations, perceptions, actions, relationships and memories you used to think you were, and that what you essentially are – being, or being aware – is beginning to shine through in your experience.

‘How can you make sure you don’t lose that? Put some time aside every day. Relax the focus of your attention from the content of experience – thoughts, feelings, and so on. Come back to the fact of being and rest there. You don’t have to call it formal meditation, although it is actually what meditation is. Every time you come back to being in this way, you magnify its presence in your life. In time, you’ll find that you don’t just make contact with your being during these periods each day – your being actually remains present throughout your entire day.’
