This is a long sequence but there is a lot of brown bear behavior. The audio is unedited – there is some interesting bear vocalization but there are also human and camera vocalizations that I cannot edit out. YouTube pixelation also seems to be back. I don’t know why but it is very annoying. Present at varying times during the sequence are at least 15 individual bears. There are three family groups (each a female with two second summer cubs), three third summer cubs recently kicked loose by their mother but still acting as one gang (called the “Ghouligans” by staff due to their dark eyes and behavior), and at least three adult bears. They are all in the rather confined area of Lower Mikfik Falls at the McNeil State Game Sanctuary. Mothers catch a few red salmon for themselves and their cubs. They are very watchful and confront other adults, and the Ghouligans, when they feel their space or the safety of their cubs is compromised. It is exciting when it happens but no harm is done. It was the first time we have observed a cub confront another family group – a mistake which appeared to be reprimanded by its own mother. The series of displacements and tacit cooperation comes to a close when “Ears”, a large and dominant male, enters the scene and the other bears disperse.
