This is the last Sunday sermon of Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King, Jr. He delivered his final Sunday sermon on March 31, 1968, from the Canterbury Pulpit at The Cathedral Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul in the City and Diocese of Washington, commonly known as Washington National Cathedral, 3101 Wisconsin Avenue, N.W., Washington, District of Columbia, United States of America. In his sermon, he refers to the following passages from The Word of God: Psalm 133; The Gospel of Saint Matthew 25:31-46; The Gospel of Saint Luke 16:19-31; and the Book of Revelation 21:5.

Where Holy Scripture is missing where you may demand it from this sermon, it is supported by six pivotal pieces of Holy Scripture. These six pieces are followed by 42 other pieces. The first six are as follows:

Isaiah 1:17: “Learn to do good; seek justice, correct oppression; bring justice to the fatherless, plead the widow's cause.”

Proverbs 21:13: “Whoever closes his ear to the cry of the poor will himself call out and not be answered.”

Galatians 6:2: “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.”

Proverbs 3:27: “Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in your power to act.”

Ephesians 2:10: “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.”

Romans 12:20: “If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.”

The other passages of Holy Scripture: Leviticus 25:35; Deuteronomy 15:11; Proverbs 29:7; Isaiah 25:4; Isaiah 58:10; Matthew 10:8; Exodus 17:12; Acts 9:36; Proverbs 11:25; Proverbs 19:17; Proverbs 22:9; Matthew 25:44-45; Mark 10:21; Luke 3:10-11; Luke 6:28; Luke 12:33-34; Acts 20:35; Galatians 6:9; 1 Timothy 5:8; Luke 10:27-37; Matthew 5:16; John 3:17; John 15:12; James 1:5; James 1:17; 2 Corinthians 8:9; 1 John 4:19-20; Matthew 5:42; Galatians 2:10; Hebrews 6:10; Hebrews 13:16; Luke 6:30; John 15:13; Romans 12:10; Romans 12:13; Romans 12:20; Romans 15:1; 1 Thessalonians 5:11; Ephesians 4:28; Philippians 2:3-4; 2 Thessalonians 3:10; James 2:14-17

The Lord Jesus Christ does not intend for those that trust Him to be idle in doing His Will nor in exercising the sharing of His love as He has loved us. This is why Catholic Charities, the Salvation Army, Christian Aid Mission, Food for the Poor, Lutheran Social Services Network of Hope, Episcopal Charities, Mennonite Board of Missions, Baptist Charities of America, The Presbyterian Mission Agency, The General Board of Global Ministries of the United Methodist Church, Disciples of Christ Home Missions, etc., and the 125+ Christian advocacy groups in the USA are moving with purpose.

Near the beginning of this sermon, Dr. King thanks the Very Reverend Francis B. Sayre Jr., Dean of the Washington National Cathedral, for the invitation to speak. Dean Sayre was a vocal opponent of segregation, poverty, McCarthyism, and the Vietnam War. In March 1965, he joined Dr. King on the voting-rights march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama.

Martin Luther King, Jr. was ordained to the ministry in February 1948 at the age of 19 at Ebeneezer Baptist Church, Atlanta, Georgia, U.S.A., where he became Assistant Pastor. In 1948, he graduated from Morehouse College with a B.A. in Sociology. Rev. King earned a Bachelor of Divinity degree from Crozer Theological Seminary in 1951. He earned a doctorate in Systematic Theology from Boston University in June 1955.
