Future fuel isn’t always the sexiest of prospects. Cars like the BMW Hydrogen 7 or Toyat Miria might be technologically interesting green tech, they don’t exactly inspire kids to put up posters of them in their bedrooms. For that kind of action you need the XP-1 from the California company Hyperion. With eye watering performance numbers, the hypercar whose only emission is water vapor is what Hyperion hopes the future holds for the automobile. It has all the hallmarks of a proper supercar, with lightning fast 0-60 times and a top speed you should never see on a public road or even most race tracks. Hyperion hopes to build a hydrogen infrastructure of the back of their new hypercar with a planned limited run of just 300 examples...which for hypercars is actually quite a lot. But first, Hyperion will have to overcome a few hurdles associated with hydrogen power. With all the advantages like being the most abundant element in the universe, efficient and energy dense, there’s a lot to recommend hydrogen and justify efforts to overcome inherent problems like portability and efficient creation of hydrogen fuel for cars. RIght now it’s a choice between a cheap method that uses fossil fuels and produces CO2 or the clean method that is very, very expensive. Hyperion feels like they have the answer and they’ve released a sexy new supercar to get our attention. Mission accomplished. Let’s look at the Hyperion XP-1 and why it has the potential to stand above hypercars still running on dead dinosaurs.
